An Introduction to Eumenid and Social Wasps

9th April 2016 @ 10:30 am - 4:00 pm

Mike Edwards (Midhurst)

A ‘beginners’ day, it will start with an illustrated discussion of their natural history and morphology and then move to the microscopes for identification of these; using specimens held at Dinton Pastures, but also anything brought along by participants.

This is a chance to gain an understanding of these cosmopolitan wasps and to start getting to grips with the main taxonomic features. RES have recently published (2014) – The Vespoid Wasps Vol. 6 Part 6 M. E. Archer, bringing a copy would be advantageous.

Workshop Bookings

Please contact Marc Taylor, BENHS Indoor Meetings Secretary, 12 Durham Street, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN1 3HS in advance to book your place at a workshop. This is essential to reserve a stereo microscope (20 are available) and a bench space in the Library or Collections Room. When possible, please bring your own copies of identification keys and any specimens that you have in the groups concerned for verification or identification.

Further Information

It would help leaders to plan their workshop if you were to provide some basic information when you book on the workshop. Please consider indicating your level of expertise with the group, how long you have been studying the group and in which region(s) and habitat(s) you do most of your collecting. Also what you hope to get out of the workshop and whether you intend to bring any of your own material for verification or identification. For some workshops handouts with identification keys are provided, while specimens to test keys and improve your identification skills may be available on the day via the leader or from the Society’s reference collections (or from the NHM collections when at the Angela Marmont Centre).
