Field Meeting for Invertebrate Recording at Monken Hadley Common, Barnet.

May 30 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

To be held on Saturday 30th May 2026 at 11.00am.

Meet at the Bakers Hill Car Park. The car park entrance is at TQ261970, at the East end of Bakers Hill:. What3Words: lungs.wicked.pushy. The nearest postcode: EN5 5QL, is cantered 230m west of the car park entrance.

Site Description: Monken Hadley Common, Barnet is a relict fragment of Enfield Chase, an ancient site which became a Royal Hunting Park in 1140. It is currently owned and managed by the Monken Hadley Common Trust, and it is open to the public. To the best of my knowledge, there has been little entomological recording at the site, and the MHCT would welcome the records. See: https://www.mhctrust.org.uk/

The 72ha site lies close to the Hertfordshire boundary, and largely comprises woodland including a very large number of large veteran and decaying trees (oak and hornbeam etc.) as well as multiple large standing and fallen dead trunks. There are a number of seasonal ditches, and a small area of marshland. To the west of the woodland is a small area of acid grassland with heather.

Site Access: The site is most easily accessed by car. However, Hadley Wood station is a 15-minute walk to the west end of the common. High Barnet Station is 30 minute walk to the western end of the Common. Cockfosters Station on the Picadilly Line is 10 minutes from the eastern end of the common. There are a number of buses which go to New Barnet Leisure centre which is less than a 10-minute walk to Jack’s Lake at the eastern end of the Common.

There are no toilets or handy shops or cafés so please bring lunch.

Contact: The meeting will be led by John Dobson: bugs@jdobson.co.uk
